The Smart Policing initiative is designed to improve police accountability and improve public safety in low- and middle-income settings of Brazil, Kenya and South Africa. It consists of an android application for smart phones that tracks video, audio and GPS coordinates. The project is coordinated by the Igarapé Institute, and includes partnerships with the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro (PMERJ). It also includes collaboration with counterparts such as the West Cape Government and the APCOF in Cape Town and the DDG and Spatial Collective in Nairobi.
Police using wearable cameras isn’t new, but the Igarapé Institute is using Android smartphones instead of proprietary hardware.
